Finding purpose: Learning to trust God's voice

Hey guys!
Welcome back to the blog!
If you’ve been following along, you’ll know that I’m all about sharing my faith, my journey, and the lessons God is teaching me.
Today, I want to talk about something that used to completely consume my thoughts: purpose.
Let me take you back to a version of me that was constantly asking God one big question: What is my purpose in life?
I mean, I was OBSESSED.
It felt like every waking moment, the word purpose echoed through my mind. I thought about it so much that it became overwhelming. I would pray and ask God for clarity, but because I wasn’t hearing Him audibly or having a dramatic “aha!” moment, I felt completely lost.
And that feeling of being lost? It wasn’t just frustrating—it was paralysing.
The Cycle of Stagnation and Sadness
Because I wasn’t getting the answers I wanted, I started to feel stuck. Stagnant. I was going through the motions but not really moving forward. I let the silence weigh me down, and soon I found myself in cycles of sadness, questioning my worth, and doubting my abilities.
It was like I was waiting for God to drop a neon sign in front of me saying, “Precious, this is your purpose!”
Spoiler alert: that never happened.
But here’s what I’ve come to realise: my purpose wasn’t hidden—it was right in front of me all along.
A Heart Check: True Purpose
In the middle of one of those low moments, I felt God gently remind me of something that completely changed my perspective:
“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” – Matthew 6:33
I realised that I was so focused on what my purpose was that I had forgotten about who reveals it in the first place: God.
True purpose isn’t about chasing after a title, a career, or even a dream. It’s about seeking the Lord and being obedient to His voice. No matter what I do in life, my first and greatest purpose is to honour God and walk in His will.
Seasons of Life
Life comes in seasons, and right now, I’m loving this season of studying journalism. I feel so fulfilled learning about storytelling and using my voice to inspire and inform others.
But if God were to call me to do something completely different tomorrow? Whew. That’s where trust comes in. It’s easier said than done, but as Christians, we’re called to follow Him wherever He leads.
And the only way to confidently follow His voice?By spending time in His Word.
“'My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” – John 10:27
The Bible is our guide—it helps us discern God’s voice from the noise of the world and gives us the confidence to step out in faith, even when we don’t have all the answers.
And even when we want answers. God isn't a wicked father, all we have to do is ask.
“ Call to me and i will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.” – Jeremiah 33:3
Letting Go of Control
Looking back, I can see that my obsession with figuring out my purpose was really about control. I wanted certainty, but God was teaching me to trust Him, step by step.
I’m learning to be OK with not knowing the full picture. I don’t have to stress about the future because I know the one who holds it.
Final Thoughts
If you’re someone who’s been stuck in that cycle of asking, What’s my purpose?, I want to encourage you with this:
Start by seeking God. Spend time in prayer and in His Word, and trust that He’s already guiding your steps—even if you can’t see the whole path right now.
As Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
Your purpose isn’t about a specific job, title, or role. It’s about walking with God, being obedient to His voice, and trusting Him with your life.
Thank you for reading, and let’s keep growing, trusting, and walking in faith together!
Much love,
Preshh
