From medicine to media

Hey guys!

Welcome to my second blog posttt!

If you haven’t read the first one, what are you waiting for?

Go and catch up—I break down what ‘Jesus | Journalism | Me’ is all about. Trust me, you’d want to give it a read.

Now that you guys know me a little better, let’s get into my career journey and some lessons I’ve picked up along the way as a second-year journalism student.

Okay, confession time: not many people know this, but I was originally meant to study medicine. Yep, me—Dr. Precious was supposed to be a thing. Growing up, I was OBSESSED with the reality show ‘Married to Medicine’.

If you haven’t watched it, it’s about this group of women in Atlanta who are all connected to the world of medicine, balancing their careers with a whole lot of drama, style, and southern flair.

Me and my mum couldn’t get enough of it! I was convinced that medicine was my future—becoming a big, rich doctor sounded like the dream.

But here’s the thing: going into that field wasn’t as easy as I thought. And let’s be real—coming from an African household, you’ll know the drill. If it’s not medicine, it’s engineering or law, and journalism isn’t exactly at the top of the list. (Shoutout to my African readers—you guys get it.)

To be honest, I was just chasing the dream my mum had for me. There’s a lot more to that story, but if you want the full story, head over to my YouTube channel ‘PRECIOUS ALWAYS’ and watch the episode called “Rejection Is Redirection.”

By the end of sixth form, after much prayer, fasting, and heartfelt conversations with God, I finally came to terms with where my true passion lies: journalism. I had to be honest with myself, and with God’s guidance, I was able to make that decision.

Let me tell you, it’s been the best choice I’ve ever made. First year went smoothly, and second year is going just as strong!

In first year, our lecturers really focused on laying the foundations for us—teaching the basics and building our skills. Now, in second year, we’ve been diving into lifestyle journalism and feature writing, which I’ve absolutely loved.

One of my favorite assignments was writing a feature on my friend’s alopecia journey. You can check it out on my Instagram highlights or LinkedIn (Precious Assah)—it’s a story that’s so inspiring.

Balancing university life with being a BAFTA Young Presenter, having a social life, and running a Christian fellowship with my friends?

Whew! You’d think I was some kind of superwoman.

Looool, I’m kidding!

None of this is possible without my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

People always ask me, “Precious, how do you do it?”

Honestly? I don’t. It’s ALL God.

One thing I want you to take away from this blog post is this: when you dedicate everything to God, He will truly direct your steps. It might not make sense right now, but trust me, in time, everything will fall into place.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs‬ ‭3‬:‭5‬-‭6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Thank you for reading! Let’s keep growing, dreaming, and trusting God together.

Much love,

Preshh
